The Commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2016

Concern for the Girl Child participated in the Commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child on 11th October 2016. This year’s International day of the Girl Child was commemorated in October “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement” was the theme. CGC participated in three preparatory meetings with Minstry of Gender, Labour and Social Development where she made a financial contribution of 500,000/=UGX.The national function took place at Moroto Boma ground, Moroto district. Partners and children’s rights activists together with the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development organized the celebration of this important day. Meetings were conducted at the national level by the National Organizing Committee (NOC) and at the district level (The District Organising Committee) i.e. in the seven districts of Karamoja sub region that included Moroto, Kotido, Kabong, Abim, Napak, Amudat and Nakapiripirit. The meetings were intended to ensure that the event was well organized and well conducted.

CGC was represented by three staff and two beneficiaries, both from Luwero SS in the national celebrations in Moroto district. The child Participation committee organized a children’s symposium where the children from seven districts that form Karamoja sub region deliberated on the issues concerning them. Issues such child marriages and teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, school absenteeism and high rate of school dropout were highlighted by the children. In the symposium that began on Saturday 8th October through Monday 10th, children were also able to highlight solutions to the problems affecting them.
