The International Day of the Girl Child 11th October 2012
Concern for the Girl Child together with other activists and the Government of Uganda - Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. Commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child. This year's theme was; "Too Young to Marry! End Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy."
One of the biggest challenges affecting girls in Uganda today is Child Marriage and Teenage pregnancy, where girls are given into marriage at a very early age. Early pregnancy has further affected the girls as they end up dropping out of school. Many other medical problems including the dreaded fistula which leaves them in dire need for medical attention.
On 11th October 2012, the all activist came together to commemorate the day. A Children's memorandum developed by the children from all over Uganda, was presented to the speaker of parliament. Children were able to share their experiences and called upon duty bearers to protect them from early marriage and teenage pregnancy.
